Industry Issues

There are a number of companies in the publishing industry that work on behalf of charity. Unfortunately, not all adhere to the strict guidelines of the Charity Commission. As a responsible publisher, it would be remiss of us not to acknowledge that these companies exist and, wherever possible, to offer our advice on the procedures these companies should follow when enlisting support from a business.

How to spot the fraudsters

Ensure that the company that has approached you has a valid contract with the charity it claims to represent.

Ask the procedure for placing an order with the company - is the order confirmed in writing?

Does the company provide you with an advert for your money, or are you told it is a donation?

Does a percentage of the money you pay actually go to the charity or does the whole amount go to the publishers?

Is the company prepared to supply you with the following information:

The full name of the person to whom you are speaking?
The name of the company?
The name of the charity it represents?
The name of the publication in which your ad will appear?
Will the order be confirmed in writing, and will you receive a publication before you are invoiced?
We are here to help

UK businesses donate millions of pounds to thousands of charities every year, and this support is responsible for improving and saving an incredible number of lives - please do not be deterred from being a part of this good work; however, if you are going to support a charity via an advert in a publication, it is important that you are absolutely satisfied that the publisher is bona fide.
